Prepare Your Plumbing For Colder Weather

While we may want to hold on to warm temps as long as possible, the transition to cold weather is right around the corner and you don’t want to be left unprepared. Taking the time to prep your outdoor plumbing now will be beneficial in the long run.

Follow these tips, and give us a call if we can help in any way!

Check for leaks
Inspect any outdoor faucets - spigots or hose bibs - for drips.

Drain your pipes
After checking for active leaks, be sure to shut off the water leading out of your home to avoid water resting in your pipes. If your home has interior shutoff valves leading to the outside faucets, turn off the valve then go outside and turn on the outside faucet until all remaining water in the line drains out. Water left in your pipes will freeze, expand, and may burst your pipes.

Cover and conceal
Once all water is drained, detach any hose from the outdoor hose bib and stow away indoors. Then pick up an installation kit from your local hardware store and follow the instructions to cover and conceal your outdoor plumbing.

Inspect your sump pump
Your sump pump can freeze and stop working if exposed to extreme cold, leaving your basement susceptible to flooding due to snowmelt and winter rain. Before any cold weather hits, make sure the exit point for water is lower than the sump pump, as gravity can help prevent freezing.

Clean your water heater
Before it gets too cold, you can drain your water heater to rid it of any sediment, which can lead to rust in your drinking water.
